Check Fortnite System Requirements

Before diving into tweaking our PC settings, it’s crucial to check if our computer meets Fortnite’s requirements. I’ve gathered both the minimum and recommended PC specifications for Fortnite to make sure my system can handle it without any issues.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (1)

I’ve tried out different settings in Fortnite Chapter 5 to find the ones that make the game look good and run smoothly when playing with others, as shown below.

Best Fortnite Display Settings

In Fortnite, pick “Fullscreen” for a bigger view, and choose “Native” for the clearest picture that matches your screen perfectly. Turn off “Vsync” to prevent delays in your actions, and set the “Frame Rate Limit” to match how fast your screen refreshes for smooth play. Using “DirectX 11” makes the game look better and run smoother compared to other choices in Fortnite. Although Performance Mode seems to be a reasonable choice here, If you have a low-end PC, your CPU might bottleneck using it so keep it at DirectX 11.

Setting “Brightness” to 100% helps see better in dark places without losing details. Keeping “User Interface Contrast” at 1x makes everything clear without extra distractions. If you don’t have color blindness, leave “Color Blind Mode” off with a strength of 0 to keep the original colors and make things easier to recognize. Turn off “Motion Blur” to avoid blurriness when things move fast, so you can see things more clearly during the action.

Turning off shadows removes some extra details. While they make things look more real, turning them off makes the game run smoother, especially when things get busy in the game.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (10)

Global Illumination: Off

Turning this off means the game won’t have extra realistic lighting. While it looks nice, it needs a lot of computer power. Turning it off helps the game run faster, especially on slower computers.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (11)

Reflections: Off

Switching off reflections means shiny things won’t reflect in the game. They look cool but need more computer power. Turning them off can make the game run better, especially on computers that struggle with these details.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (12)

View Distance: Near

Setting this to “Near” means you can’t see things far away in the game. It helps the computer by not showing far-off stuff, making the game run smoother.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (13)

Textures: High

Keeping this at “High” makes things in the game look more detailed. It makes the game look better and it will load textures faster.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (14)

Effects: Low

Setting this to “Low” makes special things (Explosives, splashes, Storm, etc) in the game simpler. It helps the game run smoother, especially when lots of effects are occurring simultaneously.

Playstation and Xbox make top-of-the-line controllers that are amazing in every type of game. They are comfortable playing for hours on end. Allow me to help you fine-tune your controller so you can get those precise headshots.

So, no matter what weapon you choose, these Fortnite controller settings are compatible with both Xbox and PlayStation. So, hold onto your controllers and open the settings to begin the configuration.

Fortnite Controller Sensitivity Settings

And there you have it! As far as sensitivities lie, these settings should have you covered in detail. Now, let’s jump onto some quality-of-life settings in Fortnite.

Some Tweaks For Better Performance

These are some of my quick and simple In-game settings adjustments that helped me have better performance.

Turning off Record Replays

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (18)

Turning off “Record Replays” in Fortnite stops the game from saving videos of your gameplay while you’re playing. When it’s on, the game uses up computer power and memory to keep recording everything you do. By turning it off, the game doesn’t have to do this extra work, which makes Fortnite run smoother and faster on your computer.

Setting Sound Quality to Low

Fortnite Chapter 5 Best Settings: High FPS & Optimization (19)

Changing the Sound Quality setting to “Low” actually helped my game run faster. When the sound quality is lower, the game doesn’t have to work as hard to process all the sounds. This gives my computer a bit of a break, making Fortnite run smoother and faster, especially during busy moments in the game.

Windows 10 Optimization for High FPS in Fortnite

Here are some great tweaks you can apply to your Windows system in order to boost Fortnite’s performance.

Update Windows to The Latest Version

As annoying as we consider unscheduled Windows updates, they make a significant difference in system and gaming performance.

So, make sure your Windows 10 is updated to the latest build. When I wrote the original version of this guide, I recommended readers steer clear of Windows 11 due to performance and incompatibility issues. However, it’s a much more mature OS now with great performance tweaks for all the latest and legacy titles.

Here’s an in-depth guide on updating your Windows PC to the latest version.

Turn On Ultimate Performance Mode

Ultimate Performance Plan is a power plan in Windows 10 that isn’t enabled by default. This is because Windows does not want your applications to consume 100% Usage. Once enabled, you may see a huge improvement in Fortnite’s performance.

Here’s how to turn on the “Ultimate Performance” mode in Windows:

  1. Go To Start > Search For Command Prompt > Open First Result
  2. Afterwards, Enter This Code in the Command Prompt.
powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02 -d5df -448d -aa00 -03f14749eb61

If entered correctly, you’ll see a successful message indicating that Ultimate Performance is enabled.

  1. Once you get the Ultimate Performance indication, head over to start again and type Edit Power Plan.
  2. Once Opened, Click on “Power Options” in the bar above.
  3. Now, you will see the Balanced Power Plan and Ultimate Power Plan. Ignore the duplicate power plans in my screenshot. In your case, there will be only two. Consequently, if you cannot see the Ultimate Performance Plan, make sure you click on Hidden Additional Plans.

After clicking on the Ultimate Performance Plan, you’ll finally be able to maximize your PC usage. This will significantly improve your performance in Fortnite and optimize Windows 10 for normal use.

Disable Hardware Acceleration in Applications

Hardware Acceleration isn’t entirely necessary for all gamers out there. Applications with Hardware Acceleration always consume a chunk of power. The feature is available in third-party applications like Discord, Steam, and Google Chrome. You have to ensure that it is disabled before you start playing Fortnite.

Our guide on disabling hardware acceleration will help you improve Fornite’s performance on your PC.

Perform Disk Cleanup and Clean Junk Files

Performing disk cleanup every week is important to keep your PC in top shape. This helps clean up all the cache, virus-infected files, leftover files, and several other files that impact Fortnite’s performance.

Most of these files appear out of the blue, while some accumulate over time. They are automatically created from bugs and crashes, and it’s almost impossible to stop them from creating. You can, however, clear them up periodically to stop them from slowing up your PC.

Eliminate Background Processes

Processes like Google Chrome running in the background, hardware acceleration hogging GPU, and any screen recording software you aren’t using hogg your resources. These are only a few, as several other processes harm your in-game performance and cause FPS drops in Fortnite.

You can easily achieve this through the Task Manager. In case you don’t know how to do this, here’s a guide by our expert on eliminating background processes to improve performance.

My Thoughts On Fortnite Optimization

Fortnite has come a long way from its early days in terms of visuals, performance, and content. I’m glad to report it’s a much more optimized game that can easily run almost every mid-range to high-end system.

After applying the adjustments I discussed, my Fortnite experience has improved significantly. While the game’s performance can be a bit unpredictable in Chapter 5, the settings and optimizations I’ve tried out have made a noticeable difference.

During my tests, I found that some settings didn’t seem to make much difference or might not have been working correctly. If you’re not using a detailed guide like this one, I suggest experimenting cautiously with each setting. It might be a bit frustrating, but it could help find what works best for your setup.

These Fortnite settings, alongside some other helpful Windows optimization methods, will help you scale the performance even higher. Like me, try to follow every method in this guide and tweak your settings by considering my suggestions as a template.

Personally, I got a 30-40% boost in performance while testing all the above optimization methods. I’m confident you’ll get the same great results, if not greater.
