Sarah Gailey is an American who specializes in both fictional and nonfictional work. The Oakland, California native spends her days reading, baking and making “vulgar embroidery” and confesses to love her smokes a bit too much. Gailey has a wide local readership and continues to grow in popularity with every publication.

The “River of Teeth” is Gailey’s arguably most successful work, and part of the novella series by the same name. In this short story, Gailey gives an alternate history of a 1910s American government initiative to bring hippos from Africa and breed them for meat. The animals are successfully brought into the southeastern US but the mission goes wrong when they reveal their true identity as ill-tempered savage beasts and wreak havoc across the region. Looking to deal with the feral hippos, the government hires a crew led by former hippo rancher Winslow Remington Houndstooth to get them out of the Mississippi. The plan is to corral them into the Gulf where they would not bother the people. When Houndstooth and his team of talents get down to business, they discover that the animals are far from his only challenge. A crime boss who has an interest in the blood thirsty hippos staying in the swamp would be happy to see Houndstooth and his team at the bottom of the river. Incidentally, the two have bad blood from way back in the past. They settle into a dangerous game of wits and death to not only find vengeance but also success in their conflicting endeavors. Gailey manages to pack a rich serving of action, violence, humor and occasional romance to deliver an entertaining masterpiece that is hard to put down. Gailey’s storytelling in this book is from the very top drawer, and she is really talented in getting the adrenaline pumping through her readers’ veins.

“Taste of Marrow” picks off from where the River of Teeth left off not only in terms of story line but also in intrigue and mayhem. The band of outlaws, led by Winslow Houndstooth, who had herded the dangerous hippos away from the Mississippi has broken apart. Houndstooth and Regina Archambault whose main talent is as a con artist have been looking all over the state of Louisiana for their compatriots. Killer Adelia Reyes and demolitions expert Hero Shacklesbury believe they are the only survivors and are on the run from U.S. Marshal Gran Carter. The two groups chance on a reunion on Baton Rouge when Adelia’s baby is kidnapped by the team’s former employer. Their new quest brings to fore unfinished business while tying up loose ends from the team’s original mission. Ultimately they are forced to face to face a life beyond the vicious lives of their past as they seek to adjust to crimeless life. Gailey continues to portray her gift for rich characterization and vivid description of events. The world in the narration feels familiar thanks to Gailey’s thorough description. Despite the dark nature of events narrated in the story, Gailey does it in an upbeat and suspenseful manner that keeps the reader engaged. After the action packed events of the series’ debut novel, any reader would be forgiven for wondering what creature would replace the vicious hippos in this installment, but Gailey uncovers a deadly underworld that would make the threat of the hippos feel mild in comparison.

Aside from her novellas Sarah Gailey is also a prolific writer of short stories, perhaps the most prominent being her contributions Bargain and Rescue to Mothership Zeta series. “Rescue” is a fantasy story about a demon named Malachai and his dog, Baxter. Baxter is kidnapped by a mage who demands that Malachai grants immortality his dashhund. At first Malachai is furious at the mage’s action but then relents only to find out that it is too late and the mage’s dog has died. Unable to revive the dead dog, Malachai offers the mage an alternative that would allow him to be with his dog forever. “Rescue” is probably one of the most acclaimed stories in the whole of the Mothership Zeta project. Gailey’s signature style of narrating the macabre with a fun twist is unmistakable. The story, while alternating between fast paced action and uneventful scenes harbors numerous twists which keep the reader engaged. Her style in her early works display the pedigree of much more seasoned writers and it is conceivable that Gailey will soon become one of the most celebrated writers in the world. One of the most important measures of a writer’s pedigree is how they are able to imprint their identity on their works. The characters, events, and settings of each of their works should be identifiable with a certain writer whenever a seasoned reader of the author’s work picks up their book. Gailey manages to do this in a proficient manner across her novellas and other short write-ups. Gailey has a penchant for macabre and gory events but she overloads them with humor and upbeat narration, a characteristic of fantasy stories that few writers can manage. Sarah Gailey is definitely one to watch in coming years.
