Pioneers Win in Keene 13-0 (5 innings) and 6-1

KEENE, N.H. – It was a tough day for the Keene State College softball team, as the Owls saw Smith College score the day's first 19 runs in eventual 13-0 (5 innings) and 6-1 losses in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex.

  • Keene State: 4-21
  • Smith: 15-8-1

How It Happened
Five crooked numbers and early leads helped the Pioneers extend KSC's skid as they still search for their first win at home and their first win since South Carolina. In the opener, it appeared initially that it might be a low-scoring affair as Smith scored pair in the second and then maintained that lead through three innings. The game got away quickly from the Owls, though, as Smith scored six in the fourth in a seven-hit frame and then added five more in the fifth. KSC was outhit 15-4 and made three miscues, contributing to six unearned runs.

The scoring started when Lexi Balam lined a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 lead in the second, but Lily Mandel otherwise navigated two of the first three innings with no issue. The game snowballed on the Owls in the fourth, when Smith scored five of their six runs after two were out. KSC nearly able to get out of the fourth down only 3-0, but an error on a grounder to third allowed a run to score and prolonged the inning, after which Taylor Ang cracked a double to center for the fifth run and Juno Shantz made it 7-0 with a blast to right center. Leading 8-0, the Pioneers moved into double-digits in the very next inning while smashing three doubles including a pair from pinch-hitter Kat Wajerski and Kaitlen Beals that drove in two runs apiece.

Emilie Doty (8-4) got the win, allowing two hits and no runs over 3.1 innings while striking out six.

Mandel fell to 1-3, allowing six runs (two earned) and eight hits over 4.1 frames.

The Owls were limited to four singles.

KSC's hole became deeper quickly in the second game, as Smith scored six times over the opening two innings including four in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Their two runs in the opening frame were both unearned, and ultimately ragged play in the second inning contributed the runs in that frame. Madison Swain singled to lead it off, and then moved to second on a passed ball. Taz Tamai's single into left put runners at the corners with nobody out, and Kiera Collins-Joseph then loaded the bases with a bunt single. Four batters later Smith had tripled their lead, beginning with Taketa getting plunked to force in a run. The only hit of that span came next, an RBI single from Piper Corey, and a sacrifice fly and wild pitch delivered the next two.

Keene State did not advance a runner into scoring position until the fifth inning on Morgan Rodrigues' double – the Owls' lone extra-base hit of the day – and did not have multiple baserunners on in any inning until the sixth, when Picard and Whittier singled with one down before Monkevicz reached on an error. Hayley Townsend then brought home KSC's only run with an RBI grounder to short.

Down 6-1 in the seventh, Megan Strzegowski and Molly Murray singled with two outs to keep the Owls afloat, but Strzegowski was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the game.

The Owl first year settled the game down, tossing the final 5.2 innings in the circle while allowing five hits and no runs. Emma Chenette (0-4) took the loss, allowing six runs and five hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Lucy Helms pitched two scoreless innings to start before Abigail Fletcher (1-0) allowed one unearned run in the final five innings, allowing six hits while striking out two.

Corey finished 3-for-4 for Smith and Tamai 2-for-3. Picard had multiple hits to pace KSC's offense.

The Owls have been swept in each of the last two years by the Pioneers, allowing 35 runs in the four matchups.

KSC returns to action Friday with a make-up single home game against Vermont State University Castleton at 3:00 p.m.
