Steak and Onion Sandwich - My Gorgeous Recipes (1)

With Super Bowl just round the corner, recipes for game day food are well sought after. I have a list of recipes that are some of my favourite bites: Super Bowl Recipes, and that could do really well on the big day.

But then, sandwiches are a quick, easy and a rather delicious meal on their own that can be enjoyed on the go too, or when time is short and a sitting-down meal is not on option.

And if you like steak, you will definitely enjoy these steak baguettes. Cooking them takes only a couple of minutes, unless you have leftover roast beef like in my Leftover Beef Sandwich, in which case the job is even easier.

I know everyone knows how to make a sandwich, so a recipe for it can sound like pretty unnecessary, but I always love looking for new sandwich recipe ideas, and this one had to be shared with you.

Ingredients used

Steak and Onion Sandwich - My Gorgeous Recipes (2)
  • steak - cut into strips for a quick and easy cooking, I used 3 fillets and they were more than enough for 2 large portions
  • baguettes - they can be replaced with any other sandwich bread, sliders, baps and so on
  • onion - I used regular yellow onion, but shallots can work too
  • garlic - use as much or as little as you like
  • red pepper - it adds a nice colour and natural sweetness to the filling
  • oil - for frying the steak
  • salt and pepper - to taste
  • rocket salad - or arugula salad
  • cheese slices - I used dairylea cheese, but anything else goes

Variations

This recipe can be easily transformed into a delicious beef or steak fajitas by using fajita seasoning. You can either still enjoy it as a fajita sandwich, or you can swap the bread for tortilla wraps.

Step-by-step photos and instructions

  • heat up the oil in a frying pan
  • add the steak strips and cook on each side for around 2 minutes depending on their thickness
  • add the peeled and chopped onion cut julienne and fry it on a low to medium heat until golden
  • add the peeled and chopped garlic and red peppers cut julienne, and stir fry them on a medium high heat for 1-2 minutes
  • cut the baguettes in half lengthwise, add the cheese slices, top with salad, then the steak mixture
  • serve immediately

Expert tips

The steak doesn't take long to cook - if you like it medium rare, it doesn't need to cook for longer than maximum 2 minutes. But even if you like it well cooked, it shouldn't take longer than 4 minutes, otherwise the meat is pretty tough.

Work in batches if necessary - if you crowd the pan with the steak strips, they won't brown nicely anymore - they cook quickly anyway.

If you can handle the price tag, rib-eye cap aka deckle of beef is a great cut. Grill it rare to medium rare and slice it half inch thick against the grain to pile on a nice sub roll. For super-tender, with no gristle, you can't beat tenderloin! However, it is not as flavorful as other cuts.

What is the best deli meat for cheesesteak? ›

Ribeye sliced very thin is the preferred cut for Philadelphia Cheesesteaks. While you can make a decent sandwich from most cuts, such as skirt or sirloin, provided it is cut thinly, Ribeye with its marbling and deep beefy flavor is a great match to the cheese and onions that often accompany it.
